Art Show Flyers
When I worked for the Washtenaw Community College ceramics department, I was tasked with making posters/flyers for the art shows my supervisor would throw. Each one had a different theme I had to make a design for, and the only requirements were to make them gray scale, and to make them fit a 8.5"×11" piece of paper.
Each art show had preexisting titles I had to work with, and was all I was given to make a design off of. "Conneckted" was a neck-themed art show, and I picked a font I thought would fit into the neck best, and stacked the text to make the layout more neck-like, if that makes sense.
"Summer Familiars" has a theme that was a lot easier to work with, and I wanted to keep it simple so to better highlight the silhouetted illustration. I had a shorter deadline for this one as it was assigned to me last minute, so I had limited time and was happy with the result I came up with despite that.
Lastly, "Overgrown Garden" was the most inspired, and I was able to visualize my illustration that I wanted to use right away, while keeping in mind that I needed to keep space for the poster text. The blur effect on the back foliage was to capture the fact that one is looking deep into a lush garden, and the castle tower was inspired by the story The legend of ‘Smeraldo’ which is an Italian folk tale about a man who hides himself away from the world, too afraid to go outside because he believes himself to be too ugly. He often sees this woman selling flowers outside his home, and years to speak with her, but doesn't. For the longest time he watches her, not having the guts to speak with her, but grew unique flowers for her to pick and sell. Eventually though, the woman stops showing, and it goes on for so long that he gets worried. Covering his face, he goes into the village to find out where she went, only to learn she has passed away. I think the story is very beautifully tragic, and I wanted to make a garden that looks like that of the one the woman would pick flowers from.
